Commemorating the River Port Community of Pattonia

Left. Bill and Tom Patton, heirs of Moses Patton and to the heritage of Pattonia, place the Official Texas Historical Marker commemorating the site of Pattonia. The placement of the marker on Nacogdoches County Road 555 instead of at the actual site of Pattonia follows the Historical Commission’s policy of making the history readily available to those interested.

Right. Property owner John Sutton, who has preserved the site of Pattonia, hosted a tour of the site in March of 2008 for descendants of Moses Patton. The original site of Pattonia rested high above the water level of the river, now the level of Lake Sam Rayburn.

Left: On a recent visit in March of 2008, great grandson Bill Patton (center) and two great, great grandsons of Moses Patton, Reagan (left) and Tom (right) surveyed the original site of Pattonia. The iron ore natural to the site, out of which steps were carved from the river bed up to Pattonia, can be seen in the image below.
